Frequently Asked Questions
 Q:  What is Triffia?
A:  Triffia is a Star Trek trivia bot that runs on the irc chat channel #Trekstuff on irchighway.net. To access irc, you need an irc client such as mIRC.

Q:  How many questions does Triffia have?
A:  You can see the number of questions on the statistics page or by typing !stats in the channel. At present, Triffia has over 10000 unique questions.

 Q:  Do questions repeat?
A:  Yes, but only after Triffia has cycled through its entire database. Questions are asked in random order.

Q:  How do I register to play?
A:  Registering isn't necessary. Just answer a question and Triffia will register you automatically. Some people may wish to register their nickname on the network to prevent other people using it. You can get help on this by typing: /msg nickserv help register.

Q:  The bot isn't running, can you start it for me?
A:  Providing the bot is still connected, you can do this yourself. Just type !start or !resume or !n.

Q:  I haven't been around for a while. What happened to my score?
A:  Triffia was replaced with a new bot in July of 2004. We reset the scores because we wanted to give more people the opportunity to realistically climb to the top of the scores table. Old scores can still be seen here.

Q:  What happens when I reach 10000 credits?
A:  A record of you reaching 10000 and your stats will be added to the hall of fame page on this site. You will remain at the top of the scores page for a period of 14 days or until you answer another question, at which point your score will be reset to 0. Whether you continue playing through the ranks again is up to you.

Q:  Can I set up a script to automatically type !h and !v when a question is asked?
A:  No. If we wanted Triffia to do that we could make it do it itself. If you do set up such a script expect to be kickbanned until you disable it.

Q:  I answered a question with an alternate nick before registering it with my main nick. Can I get them merged?
A:  Yes, just /msg tiberium_blue and ask (don't wait for an answer) or use the !report command. Note that we generally won't merge the credits if you have over 100 on your alt nick. This is to prevent any unfair play. Also note that reports are usually only checked once a week.

Q:  Why isn't my score showing up on the scores page?
A:  The scores page only shows "active" players. If you haven't answered a question in 6 months your score will remain in the database but won't show up on the scores page. The scores page(s) also only shows the top 100 players.

Q:  What does CPS / WPM mean?
A:  CPS is short for "Characters (typed) Per Second". WPM is short for "Words Per Minute". It's used as a measure of typing speed and how quickly you answered a question.

Q:  Can I submit questions from other sci-fi shows?
A:  Triffia is Star Trek only.

Q:  Can Triffia be set to ask questions from a particular series such as Voyager?
A:  It can be done, but not everyone likes to answer questions from one series. We may add this in the future once we figure out a way to enable it without it being abused.

Q:  Can you make the delay between questions shorter?
A:  The delay between questions is kept above 30 seconds to prevent Triffia flooding out conversations. #Trekstuff is primarily a chat channel. There would also be issues with daily stats being unfair if we changed it.

Q:  I have an idea for an extra feature. How do I make a suggestion?
A:  You can use the !report command or talk to tiberium_blue in the channel.

Q:  Can I suggest extra rewards?
A:  Yes, again you can use the !report command or talk to tiberium_blue.

Q:  I have a Star Trek website. Can I link to you?
 A:  Of course.

Q:  Can I get a copy of Triffia for my own channel?
A:  The short answer is no. Triffia is heavily customised to run specifically in our channel. If you're looking for a general trivia bot there are plenty of others available out there.
